Children are the future, plain and simple! Society should prioritize readying the population of children and adolescents with access to nutritious nourishment. Unfortunately, not all children and adolescents have the luxury of food security.
It is crucial to offer an understanding of why nutrition is vital to the growth of these young people; physically, mentally, and emotionally. Without proper nutrition, our youth are not fueled to reaching their full potential on many levels. A variety of healthcare professionals have the capability and responsibility to enlighten children and their families on where and how they might seek nutritional assistance through mediating institutions and a variety of other resources. Implementing healthy nutritional habits for a lifetime must become habitual from the start of childhood, and the many resources available to food insecure families are a good start to obtaining more nutritious options.
By equipping children and their families appropriately, dental professionals can likewise offer nutritional counseling, which can inform parents/guardians about the nutritional outcomes, which can affect the periodontium. Without appropriate guidance, those vulnerable to food insecurity could begin a vicious cycle for their lives and their children—including the oral systemic link. Dental professionals--let’s be a part of the solution to childhood food insecurity and fight for the future of our children!
